Before I start, I just wanted to announce that New Music days are now Tuesday. I don’t have as much time as expected on Mondays to write, and Tuesdays have consistently been easier. And with that, let’s start with the artist of the week!
The Pretty Reckless. You’ve probably heard their songs “Follow Me Down” and “F***ed Up World” on the radio, but never knew who the singer was and just enjoyed the song when it came on. How do I know? Because that was me. I didn’t look up the artist name until I heard”F***ed up World” and was curious about who sang such a daring song.
The Pretty Reckless is a New York City-grown rock band, currently signed with Razor and Tie. The band was formed in 2009 around lead singer Taylor Momsen, who was then acting on “Gossip Girl“. The lineup changed twice before the final lineup solidified in 2010. That lineup consists of Momsen, Ben Phillips (guitar), Mark Damon (bass), and Jamie Perkins (drums).
Honestly, these guys freaking rock. Like with Ready to Fire, if you dig female lead singers then you will absolutely love TPR. Momsen is this gorgeous, kick-ass rocker chick with a this raspy, catchy voice that you’ll just fall for instantly. She goes from screaming and intense vocals on the fast and hard tracks, then softens to a soothing croon on slower tracks like “Who You Selling For.” It’s so cool to hear the change. The band’s musical influences include Kurt Cobain (Nirvana) and Joan Jett, which is clearly evident once you hear their music. Their lyrics are super raw and dark, with this emotional openness that just draws you in. That pairs perfectly with their sound, which features a mix of hard rock and blues, rockabilly almost at times.
The Pretty Reckless has three albums and two EPs out, the most recent one being Who You Selling For (2016). The band recently released a music video for their latest single, “Oh My God.”
