Well, after putting it off for way too long I have finally jumped on the TOP bandwagon…and wish I had sooner!
In case you don’t already know who they are, Twenty Øne Pilots is a music duo featuring Tyler Joseph (vocals, piano, keyboards, synthesizers, ukulele, bass, drums, percussion) and Josh Dun (drums, trumpet, backing vocals). The duo comes from Columbus, Ohio, and began as a four-piece band before two members left in 2011. Twenty Øne Pilots is currently signed with Fueled by Ramen (All Time Low, Panic! At the Disco).
What initially turned me off to Twenty Øne Pilot’s music was how…well, “weird” is the first word that comes to mind. It took multiple attempts before I could really get into it.
TØP’s sound is so unique and all over the place. From one band, you get rap, rock, punk, pop, reggae, and so much more in their music–and oftentimes, you hear multiple sounds in one track! A perfect example would be “Ode to Sleep.”
Ironically, TØP recently won a Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. While their singles play all over pop stations, I wouldn’t label Twenty One Pilots as a pop group in a million years. Technically TOP is alternative, since their music doesn’t fit one specific genre.
The band begins the Emotional Roadshow World Tour on May 19, going around to various festivals such as Firefly! Click here for more info and tickets.
