Well, after putting it off for way too long I have finally jumped on the TOP bandwagon. And I gotta say, I have absolutely zero regrets about it!
Before I get into my thoughts on TØP’s music, here’s some background. In case you didn’t know this already, Twenty Øne Pilots is a music duo featuring Tyler Joseph (vocals, piano, keyboards, synthesizers, ukulele, bass, drums, percussion) and Josh Dun (drums, trumpet, backing vocals). As you can see, since it’s only two guys they each do a lot! The duo comes from Columbus, Ohio, and began as a four-piece band before two members left in 2011. Twenty Øne Pilots is currently signed with Fueled by Ramen (All Time Low, Panic! At the Disco).
What initially threw me off Twenty Øne Pilot’s music was how…well, weird is the only way I can best describe how TØP’s music initially sounded to me. It took a lot of listening and retrying before I could really get into it.
TØP’s sound is so unique and all over the place. I have never truly been able to say that about a band and have it be 100% true. One can hear rap, rock, punk, pop, reggae, and so much more in their music–and sometimes you have multiple sounds in one track! A perfect example would be “Ode to Sleep.”
Ironically, TØP recently won a Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. While yes their singles play all over pop stations, I don’t feel like it makes sense to award a pop genre award to TØP. I mean, don’t those awards go by actual genre? Technically TOP is alternative, since their music doesn’t fit one specific genre. What do you guys think? Let me know in the comments below!
The band begins the Emotional Roadshow World Tour on May 19, going around to various festivals such as Firefly! Click here for more info and tickets.
