Two days ago, Fall Out Boy uploaded the following post across social media, with the caption “second wave of M A N I A is coming.”
And at midnight this morning, Fall Out Boy dropped singe #2, “Champion” in North America, Australia and New Zealand!
The first thing I thought of when I heard the strong guitar opening notes was Save Rock and Roll. The song is musically reminiscent of the band’s comeback album, and would fit in perfectly on it. “Champion” is a major contrast from “Young and Menace“–it’s much more focused on the guitars, drums, and vocals than EDM effects. The beat on this song is pounding, and gets you incredibly psyched up. One similarity between “Champion” and “Young and Menace,” though, is the intensity of the two songs. Both are a lot to take in audibly, but reign it in right before they become overwhelming on the ears. (Unless you’re like me and blasted this song for the full amazing effect!)
After skimming through social media, it seems like fan opinions on the new song is much more favorable than the feedback Fall Out Boy got for “Young and Menace.” I’ve seen so many tweets from fans calling “Champion” their new anthem, their psych-up song, and so on. I believe that “Champion” has turned the tide on public opinion towards Fall Out Boy’s upcoming album Mania (to be released September 16), which after “Young and Menace” came out, seemed pretty doubtful that the album would be good. Personally, “Champion” has me hoping that Mania will sound more like the Save Rock and Roll era mixed with more pop elements, like they did on American Beauty/American Psycho.
“Champion” will be available everywhere at midnight Friday. Fall Out Boy will also be releasing a music video tomorrow once the song is available to everyone.
