New Music Tuesday: Tonight Alive

New Music Tuesday: Tonight Alive

Even if you’re not clued in to the pop punk scene, you’ll at least have heard “The Edge” by Tonight Alive. Why? Well, it was featured on the The Amazing Spider-Man 2 soundtrack–aka a well-done but mostly disappointing Spider-Man movie…sorry Garfield, but Tom Holland is wiping you off the floor with his Spidey performance! (I may have just watched the new preview and am overly pysched….)

Back to Tonight Alive! I first discovered the band in my senior year of high school. A friend played me a couple of their songs (“Lonely Girl,” “The Edge”) while we were on a class trip. I liked what I heard, but didn’t start actively listening to them until recently.

Tonight Alive is a five-piece band from Sydney, Australia. Like smaller Aussie band Ready to Fire, Tonight Alive has a female vocalist who kicks ass. The band is currently signed with Fearless Records (The Maine, AS IT IS). Members include Jenna McDougall (vocals), Jake Hardy (guitar), Whakaio Taahi (guitar, vocals), Cam Adler (bass), and Matt Best (drums).

What I love is the emotionally real lyrics, solid fast beats, and big guitars that fill your ears without overwhelming everything else. McDougall has an amazing voice: sweet and strong, with a bit of an edge to it that lends to the pop punk sound. My favorite album is currently a toss-up between What Are You So Scared Of? and The Other Side.

Tonight Alive is currently on tour with You Me At Six and Night People around the UK.

Tonight Alive released their third album in 2016, titled Limitless. They made a music video for the second single off the album, “Drive.”
